Poll Results.

First off, we can't thank you all enough for sharing your input on the poll post. We got some of the best responses ever. And we laughed so so hard. Here are a couple faves:

Top Knots-cute with the right outfit but most of the girls I see wearing the top knot are the same girls who go to the grocery store in their pajamas and slippers. For this reason it makes me think of dirty girls. And by dirty I really mean stinky.

Liquid Leggings: Only if you weigh 12lbs. But if you do, fashion is the least of your worries.

I'm indifferent to the combat boots. They just feel really grungy to me, like I should be listening to Nirvana.

I just can't get into over-the-knee boots. Perhaps I could if they were a slouchier pair (like the pair Blake Lively/Serena van der Woodsen is wearing) that I wore with black leggings and an oversized sweater or tunic. Most of the time, however, I associate them with prostitutes. Just look at Hayden Panettiere. She looks like a hooker. Sorry, Hayden. I'm just being honest.

Combat boots: unless you are literally in combat, I'd have to say no.

Poncho: a less obnoxious poncho? A hesitant yes. The one in the picture? eek gasp my-eyes-are-burning NO.

The top knot is something girls wear in the South when they are going to Walmart in a campus sweatshirt, VS Pink shorts/pants, and UGG boots. No lie.

Boots...depends on what they look like. Blake Lively is the only one that had cute ones out of those five. Anne, are those boots or footie pants?

...

Yep, perfection.

Now let's look at each item one more time. As far as our opinions go, we are kinda on the "it depends"  side of all of them, so we are going to share how we think each item should be worn. We feel sort of the way about each item as we do about hot dogs. If it's done right, it's delish, but it's gotta be done real right. So here we go:

Poll results:
Yes- 36%
No- 25%
Depends- 39%
How we think they should be worn:
Brown combat boots tend to be a little softer than black, and as long as they are minimally chunky with a minimally round toe we think they have the potential to be cute. Sassy Lauren from Awkward Girls does it right in our opinion, don't you think?:

Poll results:

Yes- 60%

No- 18%
Depends- 22%
How we think they should be worn:
This is tough because neither of us have long enough hair to actually do the top knot. But. We do think wearers of the top knot should avoid wearing them too often, wearing them right on top of their head, and making them too messy. Take notes from Kristine, who wears it perfectly.

Poll results:
Yes- 12%
No- 44%
Depends- 44%
How we think it should be worn:
Or do we think it should be worn? Pry not. Since every pic I could find of a person wearing one was of a Kardashian who just so happened to have paired it with liquid leggings and over the knee boots. Not even kidding. They just make me feel like you cut a hole for your head in the blanket you brought home from a trip to Tijuana. This is kinda cute though:

Poll results:
Yes- 9%
No- 74%
Depends- 17%
How we think they should be worn:
Wear with a long shirt, dress, over-sized chunky sweater, or jacket to cover your backside and make these babies more modest. Pair them with cozy tops and flats to balance out their boldness. It can work. See?:

Poll results:
Yes- 31%
No- 22%
Depends- 47%
How we think they should be worn.
No heels allowed on these bad boys, or else, as one commenter so lovingly put it: "they feel sorta hookerish."  However, we do love an over-the-knee riding boot a lot.

And that brings us to the end of another successful poll, friends!

Thanks again for all of your input! Can't wait to see what wacked-out stuff the fashion world will be coming up with next that we can ridicule! In the meantime, let us know if you take on any of these trends, we love a good risk taker!

Five Things Friday.

1. Remember how I can't complain enough about how little I like January? Well, the one silver lining of the month is that it is when retailers think that they should be bringing in Spring stuff, since in just a couple short months, most of the country will be experiencing Spring. Utahn's, however, still have a good solid 4 months of winter to go, and that's when I like January's Spring-clothes roll out, because it means winter clearance! I love a good winter clearance, like the one over at Delia's right now, where I found these colorful skinnies for only 14.99, reg. 44.50. Suuuuuper cute:

2. Look at this neato way to reuse mason jars and old bottles from over at Pure and Noble

Just a glue gun and some paint. SO cool. Think of the possibilities! You could put names on mini jars and fill them with treats for place settings, label them and fill them with things in your pantry, and the list goes on. I am officially obsessed.

3. The day I came across the idea of making chocolate chip cookies in the waffle iron my life changed. Then I came across this, and my head almost exploded:

Cinnamon rolls in a waffle iron, people! In 2 minutes your have cinnamony-waffles, or waffley-cinnamon rolls. The categorization is up to you. Either way it's just pure brilliance.

4. Remember how V-day is coming soon? Need a simple DIY gift, or decoration for your love nest? Then just look at how cute these cross stitch patterns are from this Etsy shop:

Just darling, and one of the most affordable crafts ever. Cute.

5. Guys. Ingrid Michaelson's new CD came out this week and it has been on repeat in my office non-stop all week. It is just fantastic. Here is the video for the first single from the CD. You will see her back unclothed. Partial nudity. Proceed with caution.

Yep, she is one talented little hipster.
HAAAAAAPPY WEEKEND! It's finally here! Have a great one!

A Pretty Little Thursday Giveaway. {Closed}

First, you guys. The poll. I am LIVING for your comments. Hysterical. There is much talk of "ladies of the night" going on over there and I couldn't be more pleased. If you haven't shared your opinions yet, please do. Nothing makes me happier. You are all fantastic.

Second, this has been a long week. A real loooooong one. I swear that January and its grayness just lasts forever and ever. It makes me sleepy. It makes me grumpy. It makes it so that I don't even have the energy to insert the "Snow White" dwarfs joke that I know full well should go here. However, here at PLA we are doing our best to combat the January blahs, and I think giving away pretty things helps a lot. Like today. We are giving away this:
SO cool, right? I am IN LOVE with these rings. SO stunning and unique.

And B&G Jewelry is a pretty fantastic little shop. I LOVE when I come across indie shops with talented women making fantastic things. In this case, the ladies behind it are Shelley, whose heart has always been into designing, whether fabricating jewelry or creating home accessories, and her partner, Susan, who is a well-known Hollywood casting director, and enjoys carving waxes for their large stone set rings as well as fabricating cuffs and earrings in her spare time. They are based in L.A. and make each gorgeous piece by hand. Yep. Like I said, super cool.

So, ya wanna win? Here's how:
To enter, you must be a follower of our blog and leave a comment that you are. You must also visit the B&G Jewelry Etsy shop and tell us what else you love from their shop.

Make a Statement.

There is something so comforting about putting on all black, don't you think? It's like the home security system of outfit choices, you know you are safe in the blackness. However, I still want to make a statement in my all black to take it from funeral chic to no-one-died-I'm-just-dressed-chic, chic. That is where the statement necklace comes in, since it adds a little pop of something interesting to my black on black on black. Like nuts on a hot fudge sundae, or chocolate chips in a plain cookie, or lemon in a diet coke, or sprinkles on a doughnut, or whip cream on a piece of pie...

Like I was saying...black, statement necklaces, etc. etc. Have a look:

Dress: Old Navy 13.99, Leggings: Kohls 8.00, Flats: Payless 12.49, Necklace: Gift

And here are some sassy and affordable statement options all around $15
or lots less to help you brighten up your black:

Five Things Friday.

1. Holy cow, it's been rainy here in Utah. Obviously, that got me thinking about how to look cuter whilst getting wet. Bring on the rainboots, I say! Here are some SUPER cute and affordable ones, all around $30 or under:

2. And speaking of gloomy winter weather, I will now share with you my sacred recipe for the ultimate winter comfort food: Rice Pudding. I have perfected it over many harsh winters, and I think it is pretty much one of the best rice pudding recipes out there. I eat it hot. I eat it cold. I eat it for breakfast, I eat it for dinner. It is DIVINE. And easy. And I will now share it with you. I only ask that you treat it with the respect something of this sacred nature deserves. And eat it with cinnamon on top.

W's Perfect Crockpot Rice Pudding
{Yes, this is how I expect you to label your recipe card.}

8 cups milk
1 cup long grain white rice
{yes, truly 1c rice to 8c of milk, its seems off but go with it}
1 cup sugar.

Combine in crockpot, stir well, and cook on low for 6-7 hours or high for about 5. Usually I put it it in around 10 am and when we get home from church at 4 it is ready...just cook it until the rice expands and fills the crockpot and becomes bite tender.

Once it is ready add:
1/4 cup of half and half
9 tablespoons of water
3 tablespoons of cornstarch
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Add ingredients to crockpot, stir together, and let cook for another half hour.

You're done! And in heaven. You're welcome.

3. Excuse me while I kill you with cuteness:

That's my kitty C, resting in his new favorite place, right on the baby bump. Yep. Cute. I think the babe inside tells him secrets and that's why he likes it. Just presh.

4. I HIGHLY recommend reading these 3 fantastic articles I came across this week (yep, this technically makes it 8 things Friday. Don't worry, there is no extra charge, you're just lucky):

  • In honor of MLK Jr. day, read this fantastic sermon he gave on conquering self-centeredness. Inspired.

  • In honor of my having frequent crazy and vivid pregnancy-brain induced psyco-dreams where my husband dies nearly EVERY time (SERIOUSLY, brain?) read this lovely post by Jo on this lovely book and on not taking those you love for granted.
  • And...in honor of being freaked out at the idea of being a first time mom, and for all of you Momma's at home with your first little one, read this empowering article on being a first time Mom.

5. Guys. I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan. I think as a person, she is pretty bomb and sharp, but musically, it's just not my thing. However, I DO adore the Civil Wars, and this collaboration between them is pretty great. AND it's for the Hunger Games soundtrack, so there's that. Have a listen. It's quite lovely.

And that's that!
As usual, happy Friday, have a fab weekend, love you, mean it, etc., etc.

Life is good.

{dress: Old Navy 8.75, sweater: Maurices 19.99, tights: TJMaxx 5.99, shoes: Ross 16.99}

Life is so good right now, my friends. Let me tell you a couple reasons why.

1) American Idol is back. And it has been good and I have loved it. 2) We finally got some fresh snow/rain. I am no longer worried about the end of the world in 2012. 3) We made it through Wednesday and the weekend, where W and I get to see our favorite cousins, is right around the corner. 4) I discovered this outfit, which is one of those magic ones that make you feel like a million dollars, even though it only cost about $50 in its entirety. The combination of colors, fit, comfort, and price just can do no wrong.

Doesn't get better than that.
Have a great Thursday!

The Lazy Girl's DIY Ruffle Cardi.

Over the weekend I had to wear purple and grey to be a bridesmaid in a lovely little wedding. I had the dress, but I needed to dress it up. The night before the wedding I still hadn't found the perfect little cardi to complete my outfit, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and took a quick trip to JoAnn for supplies. Then I came home and proceeded to create the laaaazzziest ruffle cardi from an old and bored cardigan hanging in my closet. No sew. No sweat. $4. Here's how:

1. Find an unused cardi in your closet, or run on over and thrift one.
2. Get your supplies. I used a glue gun, FABRIC glue sticks (very important if you ever want to wash your sweater :)) some sheer-ish chiffon, and some matching lace.
3. Cut 3 strips of fabric, each one a little bigger than the one before.
4. Fold in half and press.
5. Glue to sweater, the first strip closest to the edge, folding to create ruffles as you go.
6. Glue the next strip behind the first, gluing it right up next to it, and folding for ruffles. Repeat.
7. Glue the lace over the glued edge of the first ruffle to cover the edge, glue marks, etc.
8. Snip up your ruffles to rough them up a little and give some fun movement.
The End.

Here's my finished ruffled cardigan. Could not have been easier for a 24-week prego:

Sweater: DIY, Belt: Target 4.99, Dress, Tights: Walmart 3.99, Shoes: Old Navy 8.99

I would marry a glue gun if it were legal.
And if it didn't burn the crap out of me every time I tried to show it how much I love it. Crafter problems.

Happy Lazy DIY-ing!

Five Things Friday. {Saturday Edition}

Well hello Saturday!

Yesterday things got a little busy for S and I, thus leaving you with no Five Things for your Friday. However, on this lovely Saturday I bring you a Five Things post that I compiled from my bed, and not from my office, as I usually do. It has been glorious. Five Things Friday on a Saturday has its perks, aside from the fact that it's not in fact Friday, so the whole thing lacks any relevancy whatsoever. Anyways, like I was saying...here are this week's Five Things!:

1. These cute, COMFY, and affordable sweater dresses over at Target for $17.48! As a prego, these dresses have saved me. I live to throw them on over leggings and boots. Just fantastic.

2. Speaking of Target, did all of your see this outfit of Kendi's from this week? I. DIE.:

Those PERFECT shoes that she based her perfect outfit around just happen to be from Target as well. But I couldn't find them on their website, so I found you these copy cats over here instead for $25, so we can still all copy her. Which I do regularly:

3. This most fantastic minestrone I made this week in the crockpot from Skinny Taste. My husband is not a soup person and he even ate bowls of it all week long. Sooooo yum.

4. How COOL are these necklaces I stumbled upon from Noble House Designs? No, I can't afford a single one, unless I decided to not pay my phone bill or utilities for a month (who needs hot water anyway? Pretty necklaces!) but I love fantasizing over them, and plan to use them as inspiration for a little copy cat I am
thinking of making. SO gorgeous. You will drool:

5. Jazon Mraz's new single is just great. The problem is he is so freaking hairy and homeless looking these days that it tends to take away from the magic. I recommend pushing play and then closing your eyes. It's GOOD stuff:

Happy Weekend!

PS. Giveaway ends Monday! HURRY!

The Tale of the Sweater Robe.

I wore this to work yesterday. It's essentially jammies with a robe over them when you think about it, and I am all about making people think I am dressed up when really I could go to bed in these clothes, so I tossed this sucker on for work and never looked back.

Everything was going fine until I had to use the bathroom during a lunch date with S, and I was struggling to get my robe/sweater straightened out when my earring fell into the toilet. Then I stuck my hand in there. Then I realized the earring was not worth sticking my hand in a PUBLIC toilet. Then my hand was already in there, so I fished out the earring. Then I proceeded to the sink where I scrubbed my arm for 10 minutes and attempted to give myself a 2nd degree burn to get the toilet off my skin. Then I had to walk out and explain to S why I had been in the bathroom for 25 minutes. Then she didn't want to touch me ever again.

To be honest, it could have been worse. I'm surprised my arm still looks the same today, and that it hasn't mutated into some kind of swamp creature appendage. Tender mercies, I'd say.

The moral of this story? Maybe thinking you are an extra smart prego who can fool your coworkers into thinking you are dressed up, when you are pretty much wearing lounge-wear, doesn't always pay off. Maybe it will lead to being elbow deep in toilet water over a $3 earring from Claire's, wondering if the comfort was really worth the cost. Let my harrowing tale be a lesson to you. Just put on a blazer instead of the sweater/robe if your day means you have to, ya know, use your brain or the restroom. Just sayin.

Sweater: Gift (F21), Lace top: Charlotte Russe 9.99, Pants: ROSS 6.99, Flats: Target 3.99

In other, non-restroom related news, you can find us over at the fabulous Six Sisters Stuff blog
today talking about looking fab on a budget! Get over there! We'd love to see you.
